This is Our Life on the Streets
Parental protection!
What does that mean…
When they can’t afford to keep you and so throw you on the street?
Accused, ashamed, alone, abandoned as you rummage through the rubbish heap!
And the beat beat beat of your tired and aching feet
As you seek a place to sleep.
Military protection!
What does that mean…
When they stick a rifle in your hand and then force you into combat?
Slipping, sliding, smarting, sighing as you crawl along the floor!
And the beat beat beat of your bloody, blistered feet
As they march you off to war.
Police protection!
What does that mean…
When they steal the breadcrumbs from your hand and then give you a good kicking?
Poking, punching, pummelling, pounding you as you struggle in the heat!
And the beat beat beat of their heavy booted feet
As they chase you through the streets.
This is the life that we lead
This is our life on the streets
And the beat beat beat of our bruised and battered hearts
As we search for something more!
